Kicking off the new year for millions
The Mayor of London’s New Year’s Eve Celebrations captivate millions of viewers worldwide every year, but for 2024/25 the brief was to make magic for those watching at home. The Mayor’s office challenged us to inject some wonder into the televised celebrations, delivering a spectacle so striking, audiences would be talking, sharing, and speculating long after the final firework.
While the night sky sparkled, we worked behind the scenes to bring an exclusive, live element of London’s dazzling display right into living rooms across the globe. And the best part? Watching everyone wonder how we did it as the theories began to swirl!
Creative Concept
2024’s most unforgettable moments, from viral sensations such as Charli XCX’s Brat Summer, to historic milestones like the 80th anniversary of VE Day, all appearing within the centre of the London Eye.
Launch
The effect was achieved by projecting onto Hologauze, a specialised projection screen designed to create holographic effects. The unique design allows the gauze to effectively reflect projected images or animations while simultaneously allowing the visibility of objects located behind it.
A Hologauze screen was setup in front of a broadcast camera at a specific angle to create a perspective-based illusion. The content was created by our studio, collaborating closely with Lighting Designer Tim Routledge, Titanium Fireworks and Musical Directors ON THE SLY to ensure the colours and timings matched all visual and audio aspects.
Impact
Over 10 million people tuned in worldwide, each drawn into the illusion and eager to share their theories online. Moments like Paddington Bear’s surprise appearance had everyone talking, with major UK outlets like Metro UK and Sky News featuring our creation in their coverage.
